Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Anacostia streetcar update

DC Streetcar vehicle proposed paint scheme
Catondra Noye also said that a first phase streetcar line in Anacostia, running from the Anacostia metro station to Bolling Air Force Base, will launch late fall next year, that the construction RFP is going out imminently. Because that stretch will be built on the old CSX railroad line right of way, it will be easier to construct than if it were within the street.

At the conference, I talked for a moment with Michelle Pourciau, director of DDOT, and she said that we transit advocates shouldn't look at the streetcar route map in the Comprehensive Plan as a complete finished product, but as a start. (The map has been somewhat controversial because 8 routes are proposed in the DC Transit Future studies, but only 4 in the Comp Plan map.)

(And note, this is a comment that Dan Malouff made, I think in an earlier entry on this topic, or in conversation.)

I think we're all hoping that with former DDOT director Dan Tangherlini coming in as the DC City Administrator, we can expect that expanding transit will be a priority for the Fenty Administration.
