Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Yet another story about the car as savior

My SmartNews newsfeed also has a story about a Denny's waitress who walked 7 miles each way to and from work ("Couple Finds Out Waitress Walks 14 Miles Round Trip To Work Daily – Hours Later, They’re Back With A Surprise," ).  She was saving up for college, and to get a car.

A couple that she waited on gave her a car.

Again, when I read these stories I say "why don't they get a bike?" because a 140 minute walk is about a 35 minute bike ride.

Why is it that biking isn't seen as a viable means for transportation?
