Three good City Paper articles
Last week, I criticized some of the writing in the previous week's issue, so it's only fair to point out the good pieces in the current issue.
1. While not a full cover story, the City Paper's take on the fraud in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer was more hard hitting compared to the other media. See "Tech Support."
2. I like the sports columnist's writing on how soccer fans are already leaving DC behind in favor of a forthcoming Prince George's County location. Just like you can't expect typical sports journalists (Dave McKenna excepted) to cover economic and business issues more deeply, you can't expect soccer fans to car about the economic implications of providing public monies to the sports teams they love so much. See "United We Leave."
3. Jason Cherkis has written a number of articles about how DC's police department needs an enlightened response to calls for service involving the mentally disturbed as generally, when your only tool is a gun, people exhibiting problems tend to get shot when police officers are called to respond (see "David Kerstetter was killed by D.C. police in his own bathroom"). See "DC Police to Change Handling of Mental Illness Cases."
