Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Community branding may be too important to leave up to college students

See "Local college students submit banner designs for District Heights streetscape project: Residents will pick favorite image at March 20 meeting" from the Gazette.

While I like one design more than the other, I can't claim either is great.

Banner designs often become more about community building than strong branding and identity development for communities and commercial districts.

Top: Jasmine Rubin. Bottom: Lovie Leach. Five Prince George's Community College students designed proposed banners for the city of District Heights' Downtown Street Banners Community Visioning Project. The project is a partnership between the city and PGCC Visual Communication students to create a banner to hang from lamp posts on Marlboro Pike. Residents will have a chance March 20 to select their favorite designs from at the E. Michael Roll Municipal Building in District Heights.
