A few bucks to a neighborhood block party often "buys off" community activists for years. Just look at the how little money a number of local activists received for their activities in support of the recent attempt to get a gambling referendum on the ballot (something like less than $300 for Eugene Kinlow for collecting signatures, while the big money went to John Ray for legal services...).
The Detroit News reports that the Oakland County Michigan community of Berkley agreed to name May 13th "Mother-in-Law" Day, which is the opening day of the new film featuring Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez, in return for free tickets for all the attendees at the City Council meeting that night.
