Shared space

I am not "against" the idea of shared spaces, where you eliminate street signs and stuff and redesign the street to balance modes. But given that 45,000 people die from car accidents each year, I have real doubts about the period of time required for a transition from thinking and believing that the car is absolute king, to merely a co-equal mode.
