Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

"Big Boxed Out" in Queens New York

This links to an interview with Richard Lipsky, director of New York's Neighborhood Retail Alliance, which has (for the time being at least) successfully kept Walmart from locating their first NYC store in Queens.

"Keep Walmart out of the neighborhood" is by Sheryl McCarthy, a columnist for Newsday, and "Developer drops Walmart, not worth the trouble" is from www.retailwire.com.

This Gotham Gazette piece, "Lobbyists and their Clients" discloses $167,500 was spent by the Neighborhood Retail Alliance, which might have included help in developing this report for the New York City Council, "The Potential Impact of Big Box Stores In New York City."
