Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Petworth News

Another good neighborhood-oriented weblog is Petworth News by Bill Crandall. His blog entry on Streetcars in DC is nice and includes a map of the proposed lines. And his blog alerted me to the collection of DC trolley photos online at the "NYC Subway" website, a site that I have linked to for weeks under "Dr. Transit's Link Prescriptions"--and I didn't even know about the trolley photos there.

unionsta_trolley2Trolley at Union Station, Washington, DC, sometime in the 1950s. Note the waiting shed, which is no longer extant. From the Joe Testagrose collection. Thanks Bill for turning me on to this and other great photos!
