Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

How Lo can you go?--Selling yourself for an $8 movie ticket

I often say that the great thing about DC for developers is that we sell ourselves for so little. A few bucks to a neighborhood block party often "buys off" community activists for years. Just look at the how little money a number of local activists received for their activities in support of the recent attempt to get a gambling referendum on the ballot (something like less than $300 for Eugene Kinlow for collecting signatures, while the big money went to John Ray for legal services...).

The Detroit News reports that the Oakland County Michigan community of Berkley agreed to name May 13th "Mother-in-Law" Day, which is the opening day of the new film featuring Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez, in return for free tickets for all the attendees at the City Council meeting that night. (See "In Berkley, free tickets buy a proclamation: For free tickets to J. Lo film, city proclaims May 13 for spouse's mom; move irks some.")
