Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

But I'm not ready to abandon hope

Check out this neighborhood blog, "Greening Sherman Avenue," which supports a neighborhood initiative to "to build a median and plant trees on Sherman Avenue." Sherman needs it, and the street has a lot of potential.

You know the reconstituted Doors are playing next week at the 9:30 Club. As Jim Morrison sang "Don't Move too Fast 'cause you want your love to last, you been movin' much too fast." Change the word "love" to "change" and these are lyrics to think about when approaching change in the city, be it creating historic districts or trying to redesign areas in favor of the pedestrian.

They seem to have the right approach to the projecct on Sherman Avenue...
