Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

I was drinking coffee on the patio at Starbucks on Pennsylvania Avenue S.E. and a stylist from the nearby Bubbles Salon came out, talking to people at the various tables, telling us that she had just moved over to this location from K Street NW, and offering $5 discount coupons (on transactions of $25 or more) to try her out. She wrote her name on the coupon, and also the days that she doesn't work, to make sure you come to see her.
