Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Exterior Zupan's Market, W. Burnside Avenue, Portland

This market on the inside puts Whole Foods to shame. It's much much better looking. Doesn't have as much "exhibition" space though compared to the new headquarters Whole Foods in Austin Texas, although this store is 1/4 the size of that one. The interior design and finishings are definitely upscale and well thought out.

I am nonplussed that independent groceries don't develop all that much in center cities. The money and opportunity is there.

However, this particular store is in one of the denser areas of Portland, in a high-income area.
