Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Grosse Pointes uniting to promote their cities

I've mentioned the Grosse Pointe suburbs of Detroit, in Wayne and Macomb counties, and how East Detroit changed its name to Eastpointe to share in the allure of these suburbs where the Ford Family and executives live, rather than all the negative connotations of Detroit.

This Detroit News article, "Grosse Pointes unite to promote their cities"discusses the Discover Grosse Point initiative to:

to build relationships within the Pointes, promote the cities and build on their strengths. The group was organized after Grosse Pointe Woods City Councilwoman Vicki Granger and Grosse Pointe Park resident Leo Nouhan got a group of community leaders together over the summer to discuss concerns about the cities' relationships, keeping business districts viable, increasing property values and promoting the area to attract and retain residents. Granger said members of the group are responding to competition with communities such as Troy, Rochester and Birmingham when it comes to attracting residents. They also want to retain local shopping dollars. "Our mission is to get people to live here, work here and shop here," Granger said.

They created a blog, Discover Grosse Pointe, and they actually link to a PPS article so they can't be all bad. Plus, they are shedding light on the process, adding transparency, trying to get other people involved.

All in all, an interesting and important example for others. Wonder if Eastpointe will try to muscle in?
