Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Pittsburgh: Then and Now

The Sunday Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an absolutely fabulous feature, "Pittsburgh Then & Now: What were they thinking? From the 1880s to the 1980s, PG architecture critic Patricia Lowry tracks changing perceptions of Pittsburgh buildings," that examines Pittsburgh architecture decade by decade, with photos of the best building from each decade.

1880s Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail.jpgDarrell Sapp, Post-Gazette. As early as 1888, the Allegheny County Courthouse was regarded as the "most magnificent" of Henry Hobson Richardson's buildings.

1920s Cathedral of Learning.jpgDarrell Sapp, Post-Gazette. The University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning: A "sentimental shrine" or a building that looks to the future? (1920s)

Pittsburgh Then & Now What were they thinking.jpgDarrell Sapp, Post-Gazette. When the building was new, architecture critics panned PPG Place, as "bland" and "dreadful at close range." (1980s)
