Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Anti-Abortion Protest

I don't always carry my camera, plus I wasn't really outside, so I didn't gather any photos the other day.

I saw some great images--a garbage can by the Senate full of protest signs, a trampled "Thank President Bush for something or other sign" but no camera. EXB-WDC shot a number of photos and they are available on his flickr site.

One of the things that really struck me about the event is how many children participated. Of course, as you get older, everybody younger looks a lot younger, but so many of the participants were really young.

I find that interesting. Because of the chaos of my childhood, I was never systematically exposed to religion until I was about 12, and you can imagine, it didn't take.

I wonder if these children will have an opportunity to learn how to think for themselves, an opportunity provided to me by Professor Frances Wyers, for which I will always be thankful. (I think--being independent minded is also a curse.)

Relatedly, I find it incredibly interesting that today's Washington Times has an editorial and a column on the positives of the "Conservative" Party coming to power in Canada and how this will aid US-Canada relations because of the "anti-American" "socialist" orientation of the Liberal Party. Anyway, the commentators focused on how the Liberals lost the premiership because of the electorate being fed up with scandal and corruption of the dominant party. Later this year, we'll see if the argument can be extended further into consideration wrt the U.S. I wonder how well the Conservative Party organized compared to the U.S. Democratic Party.
