Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

(DC) Bus Shelter and Scenic Byways Meetings Announced by DDOT

From Bill Rice:

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announces public meetings on new bus shelters and on designating the Pennsylvania Avenue and Canal Road Scenic Byways.

Bus Shelter, City of Oakland, California, Street FurnitureExcept for the sitting bench, this Adshel bus shelter in the City of Oakland, California demonstrates that historically-sympathetic bus shelters are possible when working with Clear Channel.

Bus Shelters
Under the bus shelter agreement signed by Mayor Anthony A. Williams in September 2005, all existing shelters will be replaced and additional ones installed with added innovative features, such as bus maps and real-time bus arrival information. Representatives from DDOT and the bus shelter contractor, ClearChannel Adshel will describe the new program and respond to questions:

All bus shelter community meetings are from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Scenic Byways is a federally-sponsored program to select, recognize and preserve distinctive roads throughout the United States based on their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and/or scenic qualities. DDOT completed a draft study to designate the Canal Road and Pennsylvania Avenue corridors as Scenic Byways in the District.

At the following open houses, DDOT will provide overviews of the Scenic Byway program and the draft recommendations from the first phase of DDOT Byway study. The public will be invited to comment on the draft recommendations and update information for the final document.

January 17, 6-8 pm 2701 Pennsylvania Avenue SE (Police Substation)
January 18, 2-4 pm 1101 24th Street, NW (West End Public Library)
January 24, 6-8 pm 4901 V Street, NW (Palisades Library)
January 25, 6-8 pm 921 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE (Old Navy Hospital)

The draft studies are available on DDOT's website under 'Transportation Studies.' For more information, please contact Colleen Hawkinson by email or at 202/671-2228.

With regard to the bus shelter meetings, it's a way to brace Adshel and promote the idea of historically sympathetic bus sheters.

With the Scenic Byways, hmm, didn't even think about this. The National Park Service has designated other roads in DC as Scenic Byways, such as Suitland Parkway in DC, as well as roads not in DC such as the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the George Washington Parkway in Virginia.

I don't know it the intent is to develop an integrated interpretative system, as well as to bring the historic preservation and the cultural tourism aspects together. There is a website for the meta-program, the Scenic Byway program of the Federal Highway Administration, but it seems to be down at the moment. There is also a website on Historic Roads.
