Envisioning Brookland -- presentation today
The Newton Theater, 3600 block of 12th Street NE, at Newton Street. The grand opening in 1937 featured the movie "I Met Him in Paris," featuring Claudette Colbert. Currently used as a CVS Drug Store. A historic landmark nomination has been submitted for this building.
From Iris Miller, adjunct professor of landscape architecture, Catholic University:
Senior students at CUA will have their work "Envisioning Brookland" on view on Friday, 20 January, 4:30-7:00 pm, at Pryzbyla Center Atrium, 3rd Floor. We hope you can join us for the exhibition and reception. The students consulted with community members and professionals in Washington, Portland, OR, and Japan, and raised many interesting issues and talking points. Focus is on Brookland-CUA Metro site master plan, 12th Street Commercial Business District, adjacent bridges and streets (Michigan Avenue, Monroe, Otis, Newton), the bike trail, and Fort Bunker Hill Park. They consider buildings, streets, transportation, etc.

I went to some of the work sessions these students had, as well as a presentation last Spring, and I was very impressed. I had an e-conversation with somebody and he said that undergraduate architecture students tend to do more interesting work than graduate students, because they still feel like they have a lot to prove.
