Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The disadvantages of being an attractive destination

Cherry Pits - for DCist
Originally uploaded by DCist.
I was riding downtown yesterday for awhile and I couldn't figure out why the Au Bon Pain was open at 6th Street and Indiana Avenue NW, that there were so many people walking on Pennsylvania Avenue, normally the deadest dreariest street in the city, that the patios at restaurants Les Halles and Elephant & Castle were pumping, even the Occidental had tables...

Then I remembered, oh yeah, the National Cherry Festival, even after I was at the planting of some cherry trees the day before.
