Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

I didn't write about going to the Live Baltimore resident recruiting happy hour at Capitol Lounge, last Wednesday.

The chicken fingers were meaty and I learned about a neighborhood I didn't know about--Reservoir Hill, which is close to Penn Station. I was there between 5 and 6 pm and there were at least 50 people there, although many of them were with Live Baltimore and "representing" their neighborhoods--resident volunteers, people working for neighborhood organizations or Live Baltimore, or realtors.

One of the things that I think is interesting about LB is that it is a big time "ambassador-citizen engagement" operation. They train interested representatives to volunteer at LB events, which are held in Maryland and DC.

The LB weekly e-newsletter is designed to keep LB "top-of-mind" with recipients, but it also highlights other activities going on in Baltimore in any particular week, and it continually seeks volunteers for community building activities throughout the city as well as with Live Baltimore.

They didn't bring any of the refrigerator magnets though.
