Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Ideas for web-based activism sought out

So reports the BBC about MySociety.org, a web development site devoted to enabling civic engagement. From the article:

A virtual people's parliament and an archive to store freedom of information requests are two ideas competing for the chance to be built on the web. The competition is being held by MySociety.org, a charitable project that helps construct civic and community websites.

The first contest in 2003 resulted in the launch of WriteToThem.com, that allows people to contact politicians.

Anyone can submit a proposal and the winner will be announced in summer.

I'm working on a similar kind of project in DC, well, Ken Rubotsky's doing the programming, based on my idea. It's to create a web-based nonprofit "ad" network where websites such as this one could put code on the site allowing the display of a feed of "Ads" promoting issues and volunteerism, talks, public meetings, etc. for the DC Metropolitan region.

I also like the MoveOn model where people create ads on public-interest related topics. E.g., yesterday I admonished someone for spitting on the sidewalk at Union Station. Maybe we could create an ad against expectorating in the public space...
