Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Speaking of urban design

I get into "spirited discussions" at times about urban design and my vehemence that the principles must be followed always, in order to promote vitality at the street level.

These two photos illustrate the point, they are from the block of L Street between Connecticut Avenue and 18th Street NW. The side of the street with shops has vastly more pedestrians and street activity, compared to the side of the street that has mostly a slightly obscured parking structure on the first floor.
