Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Interesting political idea

Candidate Lynn Swann's platform bookAccording to this article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, "Swann puts his message, policy ideas in a book: The man who is running for governor will give out some copies for free; The rest will cost at least $10," Pennsylvania's Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann has published a book laying out his political agenda. This is something that the Citizens Planning Coalition ought to do wrt building a better Washington, DC...

It was "controversial" at first, because the campaign is selling the book for $10, although you can download a copy of the book, for free (but you don't get that nice color cover).

Along the same lines, the Nashville Civic Design Center produced The Plan of Nashville: Avenues to a Great City, a coffee-table book comparable to a comprehensive land use plan, although I presume better illustrated. It costs $40. (See "More than 800 minds come together on a vision for downtown and its environs," and "Excerpts from The Plan of Nashville" both from the Nashville Tennessean newspaper.)
