Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

New subway car

New subway car

Well, I missed this one. You can read about this everywhere else. Although I read a comment somewhere where the writer couldn't see how the change in configuration would have any impact.

(1) It eliminates the dumb poles in the entrance-exit area that are huge obstacles.

(2) It allows for more people than can be accommodated by seating.

(3) People will likely move more deeply into the car rather than bunching right around the door (and all the poles).

In the background of the first photo you can see the old Sanitary Grocery Company warehouse. Sanico was purchased by Safeway in the 1920s I think. (It might have been the 1930s.)

Here's another shot of it, taken by Dan Malouff of BeyondDC.
