Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Parking lot at 817-821 7th Street NE

This is the illegal parking lot I mentioned in a blog entry yesterday, and below is a photo of the buildings that were demolished. Had these buildings been maintained over the years, rather than neglected, they wouldn't have ended up in the condition they were in during their final days.

A mid-block parking lot is not sound public policy and is anti-thetical to neighborhood stabilization.
