Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

We saw the enemy and he is us

"We have met the enemy and he is us." -- Pogo comic strip by Walt Kelley.

From "Stargazing for Traffic Solutions," from the Post:

Dear Dr. Gridlock:

There's one point rarely raised by leaders or journalists about our traffic dilemma. That point concerns the willingness of everyday automobile commuters to accept and acknowledge responsibility for our traffic problems rather than blaming developers, politicians and the government.

Yes, they are part of the problem, but I believe most solutions come from the ground up, not top down. If everyone who drives to work biked, carpooled or used mass transit only 10 times a year, we could improve our situation significantly. Until we are willing to act and make sacrifices, even small ones, it's only going to get worse.
