Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

More about the concept of regional railroad systems

Railroad passenger statistics, Metro-North
In "Commuter Conformity Is Out for a Metro-North Majority," the New York Times reports statistics from Metro-North "Commuter" Railroad in the NYC region, finding that now a majority of the system's riders don't use it to "commute" to the city.

We don't get much of this kind of travel in the region (we do get reverse commuters from DC towards and to Baltimore and some daytrippers) because we don't have a true regional passenger railroad system.

Now the Metro-North is called a "commuter" railroad, but like the Long Island Railroad, it provides service 7 days/week, and late into the night.
