"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Replica of a Capitol Hill outhouse

The muffler for the toilet (it's disconnected...and has been painted)
The muffler for the toilet (not the original paint job)

A remaining outhouse toilet on Capitol Hill
and the toilet.

On the alley tour, someone asked about how night soils were disposed of... according to the owner of this house, which was on last weekend's Capitol Hill House and Garden Tour, (at least) this outhouse toilet was (is still) connected to the city's sewage system.

I would have never guessed.
