Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Much good stuff in Payton Chung's West North blog

-- spend and tax on how federal tax policy can subsidize commuter parking

-- City food policy advances in Chicago

-- justifying transit “subsidies”. Among other things, he writes that research from the Texas Transportation Institute finds that in Chicago, public transit saves each driver an average of 22 hours/per year in fewer traffic jams.

-- Everyone’s Fault on transportation earmarks. Some, yes, are waste...

And note, years ago I took up the keyword "car culture" based on his use of it in his blog...
