Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue SE, east of the Anacostia River

Friday night. (I should have ridden my bike... on the way to Anacostia indirectly.) I had to drop off an application (and copies) and it had to get there. The traffic was intense. I failed to mention that afterwards I got an impromptu tour of part of the Unified Communications Center, the EMA section, the emergency center (with all the tv and camera feeds) and I got to look from a window into the 911 and Mayor's Call Center. Very interesting. There are people working all the time to protect us, and for the most part we never think about it.
