Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Carytown, Richmond

From Philadelphia to Richmond, the Carytown commercial district on West Cary Street is probably the best independent commercial district that isn't overrun by chains (that eliminates Georgetown DC). There are nine blocks of stores.

For the most part they are independents, or branches of small regional chains such as Plan 9 Music. Some stores, like Need Supply Company, could definitely be replicated.

Few commercial districts in DC have quality restaurants--8th Street SE is a rare example. Carytown has many, including the Galaxy DIner.

And there are places that have music at night, and the Byrd Theatre.
