Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Do you want to do something with this? The survey can easily be filled out in an anti-autocentric way.

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is revising the state transportation plan and they are seeking input from Maryland residents. They want to know what your thoughts are regarding the future of the transportation system. The website is full of information and there is a brief survey which asks how you get around, what you would like to see improved and your satisfaction with Maryland's transportation system. It then asks you to evaluate the amount of money spent of various forms of transportation.

Please take a minute to share your opinion! This is your opportunity to share with the state that you want more transportation choices—more money for transit, more opportunities for walking and biking and less money for big highway projects.

The survey has some methodological problems. It doesn't use a standard "Likert" response set, which will skew the responses some. It doesn't include carsharing as a mobility option. And it might have been useful to differentiate Maryland on a more regional basis, i.e., Baltimore, Washington suburbs, etc.
