Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

I found this entertaining breakdown of employee commuting habits at the Patagonia Store in Portland's Pearl District. I think this is a great way to get employees and clients thinking about their travel choices and it's something that would be fun to do in my office. Out of 150 employees, we have approximately 15 cyclists in the summer and I think most of the rest commute by foot and transit.

I think that we could have a lot of positive impact by having all businesses do this in their offices. It's a step forward to transportation demand management and optimal mode shift.
