Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

A step forward a step backward

I suppose it makes sense to add service to the N22 to support baseball stadium riders, except that the N22 is a political bus route, designed in reaction to commercial district interests who believe that the lack of business patronage is due to lack of transportation access, not the dearth of retail destinations. The bus route runs between Union Station, Eastern Market, and the Navy Yard. As of October 2006 (I only have accurate bus statistics for all Metrobus lines for that month), it had 1,023 daily riders, which isn't very good.

See "Metro Seeks Changes to Busy Bus Routes," from the Post. (I think the other changes to the 30s bus route make sense.) From the article:

Metro is also seeking to boost service on the Navy Yard shuttle, Route N22, which runs weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. between Union Station and the Navy Yard station via Eastern Market. Starting March 30, Metro plans to run service evenings until 10:30 and weekends, every 10 minutes, on a modified route that will provide shorter, faster service to the ballpark.

While it makes sense to have a north side connection between Union Station and Pennsylvania Avenue by bus, maybe it should just be Michael's brown line subway, which I would add a station for Poplar Point....

(Wanted a graphic designer to tweak this map for us so I can revise and reprint the Transit/Transportation wish list into the "People's Transportation Plan for DC." See "A 2008 Transit/Transportation Planning Wish List for DC," and "Michael's Proposed Brown Line.")
