Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Idea of the day

(Sadly, these old fashioned signs are being replaced with the modern versions, although it's fair to say that these types of signs appear to depict very white people.)

DC has Ward Planners as part of the staff of the Office of Planning. DC has Ward Transportation Planners, as part of the staff of the Transportation Policy and Planning Office of the Department of Transportation.

I think we need an additional planner for each Ward, specifically tasked with the responsibility of Mode Shift planning, although I would call them Ward Pedestrian and Bicycling Planners, and in association with the Ward Transportation Planner, they could both work on transit issues.
