Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Street bulb outs, Takoma Park

Not every space on the street should be devoted to parking. While I wish that each point were illustrated, there is an article in the City section of the New York Times, "Taking Back the Streets," about 10 steps other than congestion pricing that New York City can take to improve streets for people and neighborhoods, rather than strictly focused on traffic and improving movement and speed for drivers.

They suggest:

-- The Woonerf
-- Play streets
-- Bicycle boulevards
-- Pavement Hierarchy
-- Green Grid
-- Mental speed bumps
-- Swaled streets (that got me...)
-- Lanescapes
-- Gentle congestion
-- Urban acupuncture.
