Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

U.S. PIRG Transit Video Contest

From the "Enter Our Video Contest!" webpage:

We want you to create your most persuasive video about why we need more and better public transportation. What’s your vision of a 21st century transportation system? We'll use the winning videos to help decision-makers imagine a better future. Your video will be a critical part of an effort to educate city councils, legislatures across the country, and lawmakers in Washington, D.C.

The winner will receive a $500 prize, and will be featured on our Web site. Runners-up will win $250, $150, and honorable mentions will receive a one-year membership to U.S. PIRG. Entries are due by July 4, 2008.

This isn't a submission, but is posted as an example. It's from Toronto and it may have been funded by the local transit union. They make a very interesting point, that the economic value of the entire system can be divided by the number of workers, to calculate an economic value average for each worker.
