Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

VeLib comme le vent!

From Eric Britton:

... let me share the latest direct from the system ops office. I will not duplicate the mass of background data, etc. that appears on our and the Velib site.

· Some 26 million Vélib’ trips carried out in first year

· Total bikes in service - ca. 16,000 (20,000 + 600 reserve targeted for end year)

· Stations in service - ca. 1,200 (target end year: 1,451)

· Average trip – ca. 18 minutes

· 190,000 paid-in pass holders (at 30 Euros each)

· Fatal accidents over year – 3

· Stolen or vandalized bikes over year – ca. 3,000 (remember that’s over 12 months)

· Number employees: ca. 350

PS. The people who complain most about the system are those who do not use it every day. If you are in the latter lucky category you learn how to work the system. Which, incidentally, is just great!
