Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

BP offers free Wi-fi to fuel interest in gas stations

so says USA Today, here. All the more reason for transit systems to get more focused on the customer. I am agnostic on whether or not WMATA should participate in Google Transit (see "Washingtonians want Google Transit!" from Greater Greater Washington) especially while letting Google monetize the information -- I would be fine with it, if Google would give all the advertising (Ad Sense) profits for using this information to the local transit system providing the base information. (WMATA's ride planning function is actually one of the best offered by transit systems nationally, although it doesn't adequately link to information about the things around the station, unlike Google.)

On another note, also see "Internet Access Turns School Buses Into Rolling Classrooms" from the Wall Street Journal. which was based on this article, "Sheridan turns school bus into classroom," from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
