Promoting pineapples outside the Whole Foods Supermarket, Silver Spring

And to show that "modern" food merchandising techniques are nothing new, below is a photograph of outdoor stalls in the area of the old Center Market (after the main building was torn down), at a stall promoting pineapples. The Center Market was demolished in 1931 and replaced by the National Archives, although outdoor stalls remained for a number of years in the "old" market district surrounding the market.
