Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Luminato 2009

Luminato 2009

Part of Toronto's Luminato Festival, a festival of Arts and Creativity, involves a public sculpture component. See "Luminato goes public with art installations" from the Toronto Star. Rather than just being in one place, Luminato is all over town, and this is demonstrated through the public art and sculpture component. I like the "cheekiness" of the installation, such as this one placed in one of the entryways to Toronto's Old City Hall.

For more on artist Kurt Perschke's Red Ball Project, placed in a variety of places in Toronto's urban landscape, with the idea of moving through a city and taking the opportunity to "intervene," see this video.

The project was first installed in St. Louis.
