"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Album cover, "More songs about buildings and food," The Talking Heads.

David Byrne of the band the Talking Heads has not only designed bicycle racks for New York City, but has written his thoughts on the perfect city in today's Weekend Journal section of the Wall Street Journal, "A Talking Head Dreams of a Perfect City: Osaka's robot-run parking lots mixed with the Minneapolis lakefront; a musician's fantasy metropolis." He covers:

• size
• density
• sensibility & attitude
• security
• chaos & danger
• human scale
• parking
