Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Bike gutter at Union Station, Denver

RG also passes along this photo showing the creation of a bike gutter (a trough on stairways) on this stairwell. It is rare to find a bike gutter in place on stairways in the DC area.

As Denver builds out its light rail system, the Union Station area--not just the train station--is being redeveloped in a multimodal transit hub. A very interesting article, "Union Station may become Denver's gateway again -- if it stays on track" about the plan and process ran in 2008 in Westword, that region's alternative weekly.

More recently, there were followups, "What lies ahead for the Union Station project" and "Union Station: What comes next in Denver's ambitious rail plans, part 2," after the project received $304 million in federal loans, and was able to move forward.

Denver Union Station. I have always been particularly enamored of the neon sign with the tagline, "Travel by Train." Flickr photo by mirtai.
