Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Happy July 4th

My intent was to do a piece on civic engagement and democracy, thinking about the Declaration of Independence, Tocqueville, public protest in Turkey and Brazil (and Egypt), and how the prosecutor in San Diego tried a case against someone who wrote in chalk protest statements outside Bank of America branches, but it looks like it will take more than today for me to get around to finishing it.

This photo is from today's parade in Takoma Park, Maryland.
