Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Preservation Month a good time to call attention to newly landmarked properties and districts

Louisville, Colorado will be having ribbon-cutting ceremonies for three landmarked properties this coming Saturday.

See "Louisville to recognize recently designated landmarks on Saturday" from the Boulder Daily Camera. Ceremonies will include ribbon cuttings and presentations of historic plaques.

DC does hold its annual preservation awards in May. (I probably can't take full credit for it, but I did suggest that DC create this awards program to the city's then director of long term revitalization back in 2002, and the program was inaugurated in 2003.)

But it would be good to hold events out in the field as a form of community building and increasing the understanding of the value of historic preservation to neighborhood revitalization.

...  along with d a historic preservation conference/renovation expo.

And house tours.
