Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Public art online resource: Forecast | Public Art Review journal no longer published

A public art "controversy" ("s," ) in Salt Lake -- a traffic circle is going to get a sculpture of a whale, called "Out of the Blue" by Stephen Kesler, which I think is out of proportion for the space ("Whale vs. gnomes: The battle raging inside SLC’s 9th & 9th roundabout," ABC Salt Lake), reminded me about the journal Public Art Review published by Forecast, the nonprofit advocacy and consulting organization.

It turns out that last year Forecast stopped publishing of PAR, but have put all the issues up online.  (Most already were online, but usually there was a lag on the most current issues.)

They have replaced it with an online "magazine" called Forward.

One of the articles, which I have not yet read is "How Artists Create More Responsive, Equitable, and Sustainable Transportation Solutions."

I still think that ceasing the publication of Public Art Review was a mistake.

It's important to continue to publish physical publications. And these kinds of publications need to be subscribed to by public libraries, at least for the main branch, as part of a collection focused on civic engagement and urban planning.
