Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Transit villages...

Relearning from the trolley suburbs, San Francisco Chronicle columnist John King writes, in "Transit towns a step to cut carbon footprint," about suburban transit villages and the behavior changes favoring community involvement and increased use of transit.

What I found interesting was one of the commenters, who makes a good point about these people still driving a lot, and having deed restrictions concerning car ownership.

The article has some images. I don't know if I like the designs or not. They do seem marginally better than those present in Fort Totten.
