Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Private[ization] Doesn't Mean Better

I still remember the term "satisfice" combining the words satisfy and suffice, from a college class in public administration. So much of the government, particularly at the federal level, is ideologically driven these days.

You'd think after Enron, Tyco Laboratories, WorldCom, HealthSouth, and all the rest, that the ideologues would let up for a moment on the argument that the private sector is always a superior provider compared to the government.

William Raspberry, columnist for the Washington Post, has a piece on this topic today. The column, all-in-all, isn't that great. But at least he raises the point.
