Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Special LA Times Op-Ed pieces on Mobility

Cool Way to Unclog L.A..jpg"Cool Way to Unclog L.A." by Harry Campbel For The Los Angeles Times.

This section includes "A Cool Way to Unclog LA"; "The Scourge of Free Parking" by Donald Shoup; "Derail Trains and Ding Drivers" (which I disagree in part wrt to the Washington, DC regional experience as far as rail is concerned, but the article is interesting and provocative); and "Take the Boot off Private Transit" (I have a sweet spot for the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority in Dallas, which is a private franchise, albeit it doesn't make any money, but I like the idea of being able to get out there and get things done).
