Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Wichita--batting and playing in the minor leagues?

Today's Wichita Eagle has an article, "City pays to make its best pitch," about how the city is paying to sponsor the regional television broadcast of the city's minor league baseball team. The broadcast on Fox SportsNet will reach 6 states. "Promotions of Wichita, including six commercials and a 90-second interview with Mayans during the 7th inning stretch, will appear on TV during the game, said Jessica Johnson, the city's marketing director. Three 30-second city commercials, two airport ads and a Greater Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau commercial will air, along with photos of Wichita."

The idea is good but I don't know about the execution. The ad online (linked via the article) doesn't do a very good job of making Wichita seem exciting. You've got to sell benefits and excitement. I also don't know if the $10,000 spent on this is the right way to go. Maybe money on cable yes, but on late night infomercials etc.
