Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Royal Oak Music Theatre

I forgot to include a link to this article in yesterday's blog entry about rocking revitalization. http://www.detnews.com/2005/oakland/0508/03/B03-266431.htm

The Royal Oak Music theater is a great facility in Oakland County Michigan. Royal Oak has had tremendous success in downtown revitalization, although the town continues to shrink. (RO once had two of the largest high schools in the area. Now they've merged into one school.)

I have two very fond memories of this theater. One was seeing a double bill of Harold and Maude and Annie Hall for $1.50; the other was seeing the Boomtown Rats the week I got home from freshman year at the University of Michigan.

According to the article, 2 of the 5 "big events" each month are sellouts. That's not bad...
